Is Your Child Feeling Anxious? Practical Ways to Help Them Feel Safe and Confident
Share
Feeling worried from time to time is a normal part of growing up. Whether it's a big test, making new friends, or trying something unfamiliar, every child experiences anxiety at different moments.
The challenge is recognizing when those worries begin interfering with your child's daily life.
Children don't always have the words to explain what they're feeling. Anxiety may appear as irritability, trouble sleeping, frequent stomachaches, avoiding school, perfectionism, or emotional outbursts. Instead of asking, "What's wrong?" it can be more helpful to become curious about what your child may be experiencing beneath the surface.
Here are a few simple strategies that can help children build emotional awareness and healthy coping skills.
1. Create a Safe Space to Talk
Instead of trying to solve the problem immediately, invite your child to share their thoughts and feelings without judgment. Listening first helps children feel understood and supported.
2. Teach Them to Pause
Simple breathing exercises can help calm the body's stress response. Encourage your child to slow down, take a few deep breaths, and notice how their body feels before reacting.
3. Help Them Name Their Feelings
When children can identify emotions like worry, frustration, or disappointment, they begin developing emotional regulation skills that support lifelong resilience.
4. Create Daily Calm Routines
Reading together, journaling, quiet play, mindfulness activities, or spending time outdoors can help reduce stress before anxiety builds throughout the day.
5. Encourage Problem-Solving
Rather than providing every answer, guide your child to think through possible solutions. This builds confidence and strengthens executive functioning skills such as flexible thinking, planning, and self-regulation.
Remember...
The goal isn't to eliminate every worry.
The goal is to help children develop the confidence and skills to manage challenges in healthy ways.
At Executive Brain Academy, we believe children thrive when they are given practical tools, emotional support, and opportunities to build independence—one small step at a time.
