Normalize All Emotions
Share
One of the most powerful ways we can support our children’s mental and emotional well-being is by making emotions normal. Talking openly about feelings—big or small—teaches kids that emotions are part of being human, not something to be ignored or pushed aside.
Children deserve our support as they learn to handle their big feelings. As adults, we understand that it’s not always appropriate to express every emotion in every place, and that’s something we can gently teach our kids too. The key is to validate their emotions while guiding them toward healthy ways to cope.
Here are some simple, positive outlets for kids to express and release emotions:
- Reading – Share books together and talk about how the characters navigate emotions, challenges, and differences.
- Art – Encourage your child to draw, paint, or create something that reflects how they’re feeling.
- Writing – A simple journal can help kids put their thoughts and feelings into words at the end of the day.
- Music – Let your child pick a song that matches their mood and turn it into a little release.
- Talking – Create a safe space at home where feelings can be shared openly. Listen, ask gentle questions, and involve your child in finding a plan to handle tough moments.
- Taking a break – Sometimes the best strategy is to pause, step away, and revisit the situation once everyone has had time to calm down.
Helping kids recognize and express their emotions in healthy ways doesn’t just make the hard moments easier—it gives them lifelong tools for resilience, empathy, and self-confidence.
